I took this pic last week and just had to put it in the Diary. I had never seen, or heard of, an Earth Star before and when I first saw it I thought somebody had put it on the ground just as a joke. The middle part is a puff ball and the petals feel like ordinary fungus. Rain drops falling on the central puff ball force a jet of spores out through the small opening in the middle. It is amazing that such a beautiful thing can appear from nature without design help from anything or anyone except itself, nobody trying to improve the colour or shape, no interference. Wonderful. Apologies for getting lyrical, it must be all the mulled wine.
